Holiday cheer...and then some!

Hello out there!

It is the final day of the A!TLC Fall 2013 Semester and we cannot believe it. It has been a pretty epic few months! We have done so many things and feel like a great team. We are also so excited to see what the next semester (starting on January 7, 2014!) will bring. But for now, let's all stop and enjoy our holiday break....

Today the A!TLC  will be going off campus to celebrate and to get a little bit festive! :)
We will begin by toasting one another over lunch and then head to the Southland Mall to do some of that Christmas Shopping that we mentioned in our last blog entry. This is Christmas giving in real time - we will have half an hour to seek out the perfect gift for whoever we have been assigned to be a Secret Santa for. Then, everyone will meet up to do the big exchange. As we are a bunch of extremely thoughtful (and modest!) people, this Secret Santa gift exchange is a pretty big deal to us and we are so excite to see the look on our lucky gift recipient's face as they tear into their present! Good vibes all around and a very high note to end the Semester on. Huge thanks to everyone who made this Semester possible, and to our brilliant and ever-so hardworking Student Researchers. It is a beautiful thing to get to work together like this each day.

We would all like to wish you (yes, you!) a wonderful holiday and a Happy New Year!  HO HO HO!

All the best,

The A!TLC

Christmas is Coming to A!TLC

Hello Out There!

Christmas is coming to the A!TLC .....on December 19th to be precise!  Together we are going to celebrate the holiday season by going out for lunch and then participating in a Secret Santa Exchange. After we have lunch we are going to jaunt over to Southland mall to do our shopping!

Today we drew names for the exchange and then participated in an activity to help our Secret Santa decide what to purchase for each of us.

UN International Day of Persons with Disabilities

Hello out there!

Well....today is the day.  The Un International Day of Persons with Disabilities and we at A!TLC are proud to be part of and celebrate the day! The theme for the day is 'Break Barriers, Open Doors: For an Inclusive Society and Development for All!

Over the past two months we have been working with Chelsey and Jenni - two Kinesiology students enrolled in Kin 342 Active Living & Developmental Disabilities to highlight the day!  Leading up to today we have been going to various U of R classes to show a ten minute presentation highlighting Astonished! and providing information to students and insturctors on how they can get involved with Astonished!

Today, Tuesday December 3, we have a booth set up in Riddell Centre from 1-4pm.  With Jenni and Chelsey we will be handing out Tim Horton's coffee and snacks to those who stop by to learn more about Astonished!  To keep things interesting we also have a jar filled with candy and are asking members of the student body to guess how many pieces the jar contains.  The person who guesses correctly or is the closet will win the jar!  We are also encouraging people to ask us questions about what it is like to live with complex physical disAbility. Throughout the afternoon we will be posting their questions on the blog.   Over the next few weeks we will be answering the questions.  If you can't make it today ensure you come back to the blog to see the questions that were asked of us and our responses! .......Stay Tuned!

Thanks for Reading!

Catching up!

Hello out there!

We have missed blogging for the past few A!TLC sessions and thought that we would throw you a line to get you back in the loop!

If you ever wondered what everyone at the A!TLC looks like wearing red, you can stop wondering now. December 1st is World AIDS Day and Student Researcher Kennen Dorgan snapped this shot (while appearing in the shot herself!) last week as the A!TLC wore red to help raise HIV/AIDS awareness. Following the picture, most everyone returned to GREEN to support our own Riders. ;) WHATTA WIN!

The 26th was our final rendezvous (for now!) with some awesome Douglas Park Students. This last visit (we went to them) had us cooking and crafting and trying out their new sensory room. The room was managed to be extremely stimulating and soothing all at the same time. We at the A!TLC give it a rave review! Thanks again for having us, Douglas Park.

Yesterday, we popped into the CKHS 185 class to join Kin. students Jenny and Chelsea to help them hand out Menchie's flyers - remember that if you head to Menchie's Rochdale next week (Dec 1 - 7)  and show the flyer, A! will receive 20% of the proceeds. Win, win, win!  We are gearing up for the UN International Day of Persons with Disabilities and if you happen to be at the University from 1:00 - 4:00 on December 3rd, swing by the Riddell Centre to pay us a visit. We will have a table set up filled with A! information, coffee, cookies....We will also have a communication book set up for you to (anonymously or not!) record any questions about disability or our organization that YOU may have.

Today is a big day! Not only do we have our favorite, Inclusion cafe, but we have Kennen's PATH celebration. We at the A!TLC are so excited to rally around Kennen as she sets some important goals for herself. It is going to be WONDERFUL!

And, birthdays! We would like to wish the lovely Brenda MacLauchlan a very happy belated birthday (it was yesterday!) and the excellent Jasmine Gerein a very happy early birthday (she turns the wise old age of 23 on Monday!). Good people that we would like to celebrate. Thank you for being born!

That's it for now. We hope that you feel back in the loop and look forward to posting more updates ASAP.

Thanks for reading!

A Monday-Like Tuesday...

Hello out there!

The long weekend has left us a bit worn out, actually! We were all a little silly and sleepy at today's A!TLC. Oh well. We carried on and got lots of stuff done!

Double presentation this Monday (the 18th) - We will be coming to a SW479 and KIN 120 class near you to present on Barriers and Enablers and to share our sweet Menchies flyers!

Our pages for the One Page Project are nearly ready to share! Stay tuned.

Douglas Park round three is happening and we have some good ideas to share with the students!

And Inclusion Cafe is back this week! See you at the Owl on Thursday at 2:30? SO excited!

Thank you for reading and have a good one!

Tricks and Treats (mostly treats!)!

Hello out there and Happy Halloween!

First off, here are a few things that our fab Student Researchers like about this spooky day:
Kelsey - I like seeing all the little kids dressed in costumes. It's so cute!
Rebekah - I like getting all dressed up and handing out candy to all of the excited trick or treaters! Kennen - I like making my own creative costume...as long as it is not too hot to wear!

We got some business out of the way so we could get to the fun stuff. Item one - Prep for The UN day coming up on December 3rd - We are excited that Kin students Jenny and Chelsea will be joining us for coffee today to give us our schedule for class presentations leading up to the date!
Item two - Discussion about our final Douglas Park day coming up on November 26.

Now the fun - inspired by Rebekah's mime work yesterday, we played an old fashioned game of (Halloween) charades. We must (modestly) say that our acting skills are pretty great.

If sweet treats are your thing, there was plenty of great food to go around today. Hopefully there are no tooth aches are coming our way.

Rebekah - Hey Mom and Dad! Hope you are having fun! Can't wait to hear about how much fun you had.

Kennen - Sara! Thank you so much for knitting me the great pumpkin hat! I love it.

Flipping the bird!

Hello out there!
Inside joke title...let's just say it was a fabulous and funny day at the ol' A!TLC! We started slow and Avery feared that she might be the only Student Researcher in the room. But then in burst Kaitlyn, Kennen, and Rebekah (we miss you on Wednesdays, Kelsey!) and there were stories and GOOD NEWS (a secret, for now!) and the fun really began. We worked hard on the One Page Project and tried to come up with creative ways to explain "who" we are.  Things are looking good and each page will be really, really great (if we do say so ourselves).
Rebekah was so happy to have her very dear friend, Barbara join us for coffee today. Rebekah met Barbara in the Ad Hum Building and showed her the way to coffee - which is a great thing because Barbara said that she might have gotten lost otherwise! :)
Join us, join us, join us for Inclusion CafĂ© at the Owl tomorrow! As usual, it will be a very good time indeed.

Turkey Tired!

Hello out there!

It was a great Thanksgiving long weekend and we are a bit tired from all of the delicious turkey!
For her check in, Rebekah shared an awesome and interesting video of her cousin's wedding. Amazing! Congratulations Jill and Farhan - you are such a lovely couple. And in other Rebekah news - she is an auntie for the FIFTH time. Welcome to the world, beautiful baby boy Jonah Joshua Lindenbach!
Kelsey had the chance to confirm her strengths, dreams, and needs with the A!TLC crew. It was a great time to learn just a little bit more about Ms. Culbert!
We are delighted to be taking part in the U of R's One Page Project! Each Student Researcher will have their very own page in a book that will be published in February 2014. Thank you so much to the Fine Art Department's Art Store, for inviting us to be a part of this exciting project!
Kelsey would like to say hello to her Auntie Jody - Are you reading this, Jody??? Thank you for reading the blog each day. :)

Tuesday 8 October 2013

Introductions and Opportunites (and combines and frozen yogurt!)

Hello out there!

It was a day of lovely guests and introductions! Jenny and Chelsea, it was a pleasure to meet you and we are so excited to be working with you for the UN International Day of Persons with Disabilities.
Props to Chelsea for hooking us up with Menchies - If you show this flyer or a picture of it during the week of December 1st then Astonished! will receive 20% of the sale! Win win win!

Tara, it is so good to have you coming to the A!TLC each Tuesday and Thursday. And bonus points for suggesting that we also have Inclusion CafĂ© on the first and third Tuesday of every month! LOL Fun!

Our University Opportunity list continued and we must say that it was pretty darn difficult to pick our top three choices! So many great things to choose from....

And, SUCH good news! We are so happy that we are going to Broyhill tomorrow! Rebekah, you are going to rock it and we are so proud of you. Even though it has not been very fun to wait, your combine ride will be worth it!!!!!

An A!TLC Shout out to Kaitlyn and Kennen. We missed you ladies big time today. See you very soon! :)

First of the Month!

Hello out there!

It is the first of October and it marks the first anniversary of Rebekah and Jenna working together and being super awesome best friends! Happy Anniversary, you two!

We would like to thank Randy Johner for having us in her SW 479 class yesterday. Our presentation went great and we feel so good about it! It was a pleasure!

And speaking of our presentation...SURPRISE! We are going to be giving another one this Thursday at the University's Centre for Teaching and Learning. Yes, it is last minute. Yes, we are going to rock it!

########

We continued our exploration of the hashtag and might have even gotten our own Twitter account......

Kelsey may have a very confused Stepdad after he received #brownsugarbacon. LOL

Rebekah is excited that big PATH things are happening and wants us to stay tuned!

Avery is excited to rest up for tomorrow....hopefully this darn cold will be gone by then!

Daily Shout Outs:

The A!TLC would like to send our best wishes to all of the U of R residents that have been affected by the flood. Take care, you guys.

The quickest blog in the world!

Hello out there!

It has been quite the week! We spent our Tuesday with the DC class at the BEAUTIFUL Douglas Park School. The space was lovely and well set up and the hospitality was fabulous. :) The DC Students were aged 8 - 11 and it was a pleasure to meet them. Our Student Researchers did a wonderful job breaking the ice and getting to know everyone. We are looking forward to getting together again in October and November. It is the start of a beautiful friendship and mentorship.....

We feel a bit gloomy about the rain this week. :(  Bekah's Broyhill Bash was called off again and there was disappointment all around. Wishing Joy a Happy Belated Birthday. It would have been a pleasure for the A!TLC to have come and spent your birthday with you.  Rebekah, it is going to be worth the wait, we just know it. :)

Wishing Jenna and Silvia very happy birthdays today! Silvia, hope that your midnight birthday serenade went well! Jenna, have a wonderful time celebrating! You deserve it. Oh! and Happy Anniversary!

We have to go now....gotta love Inclusion Cafe days! See you at the bar!

Rebekah - Hello Susan! Hope your flight went well. Wish that we were in Charlottetown to meet you.

Fire Safety and beyond!

Hello out there!

Today was a big day for Fire Safety. We had the University's Wally Hurlbert come in to the A!TLC to help us be better prepared in case of emergency. There will be no reason to be alarmed when the fire alarm goes off! Each fabulous Student Researcher helped with a real life demonstration of where to go in case of emergency....by cramming themselves into the stairwell! Everyone was AWESOME. Now, here's hoping for some strong and handsome firefighters if a fire situation ever comes up. :)
Sardines!

We are ready and so excited about our Douglas Park Fieldtrip on September 24! There are some great activities planed and it will be a great time. Big thanks to Deanna Apperley for inviting us!

Then September 25 will be our rain checked day for Bekah's Broyhill Bash. Fingers are crossed big time for a beautiful day!

Tired was an understatement for Avery after the hectic time she had in Saskatoon yesterday - regardless of that, she was an absolute gem.

Kelsey was the opposite of tired thanks for her very first French vanilla latte!

Rebekah was thrilled about her "take your Brenda to work" day.

Kennen got another photography session under her belt. Keep up the great work!

Kaitlyn is super excited about her big weekend to party with Courtney, Kyla, and company....

Thanks for reading!

Daily Shout Outs:

Rebekah - HI RUTH!

Kaitlyn - What's up, Bailey?

Checking in!

Hello out there!

We have to say, today's check-in was pretty epic! Everyone had an interesting story to tell and we learned A LOT! What a great start to an A!TLC day.
We would also say, get ready Douglas Park! There are some good plans in place and it is going to be a FUN fieldtrip. Now, we just have to get making those ice-breaking butterflies! We will explain later, promise!
Fingers are crossed for no rain tomorrow so that we can go and cheer on Rebekah as she rides the combine....and so Rebekah can see the surprise that we have prepared for her. No Hints!  Kennen is so looking forward to having Tanys and Zoey join us at Broyhill.
It was an absolute pleasure to read the beautiful A! newsletter today. Thanks so much for your lovely words, Brenda MacLauchlan.
It was so great to have Dalton join us at coffee today! Thank you for introducing him to us, Avery! The two friends go way, way back....
Now we are just waiting for Kelsey's friend Courtney to join us for the tail end of coffee - the two ladies are going to hang out and catch up at the University even after the rest of us go home!
And Kaitlyn, it was so great to see your face at coffee! Such a lovely face to see. :)

Daily Shout Outs:

Kaitlyn - Excited to see you tonight, Courtney!

Kennen - Excited to see you at Broyhill, Tanys and Zoey!

Rebekah - Hello to the Rae Street Crew!

Wednesday 11 September 2013

Fun and games!

Hello out there!

Today we had a wonderful day with some old literacy throwbacks – 4 pics/1 word, reading “Can you Keep a Secret?” and reviewing Letter-Sound Correspondence – and then all we played a new game called “Apples to Apples” . Although Kaitlyn was a wonderful 4 pics/1 word instructor, Rebekah preferred “Apples to Apples” just a little bit more. J We all discovered that men are “comical”, Bill Clinton” is absurd, and pyramids are “mystical”. Very good!

We are so excited about our Inclusion CafĂ© tomorrow from 2:30 – 4:00! The location is still The Owl, which is our on campus pub. It will be super fun and a great way to toast a busy week!

Although minors are not able to join us at the pub, anyone is invited to our daily coffee (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday 3:00 – 4:00) which happens in the very minor-friendly laboratory cafĂ©. (Hint, hint, Tanys and Zoey!).

Thanks so much for reading!

Tuesday 10 September 2013

Back in the swing of things - new fun, new faces, new semester!

Hello out there!

It has been a real whirlwind at the University of Regina! The A!TLC is BACK for a new fall semester and Kelsey Culbert and Avery Ottenbreit have joined our team! Welcome, Avery and Kelsey AND Welcome back Kennen, Kaitlyn, and Rebekah! It is a very good time to be a Student Researcher, indeed. We have lots of new stuff going on as well as the happy return of our old routines, like, for instance, Inclusion Cafe! By popular demand, we have increased the Inclusion Cafe hours - you can now find us at the Owl on the second and fourth Thursday of each month from 2:30 - 4:00. We are having our first Inclusion Cafe this Thursday, September 12. Come on down and join us! Looking forward to it.
Kelsey Culbert, Avery Ottenbreit, Rebekah Lindenbach (back row)
Kennen Dorgan, Kaitlyn Hoar (front row)

For Rebekah, there is a BIG something to look forward to - next Wednesday, a PATH dream of hers will be coming true as she rides a combine to help her family with their busy harvest. The A!TLC is so excited to be there to support her.

Kennen is so excited about her ongoing photography mentorship with Brenda MacLauchlan.

As for Kaitlyn, she cannot wait to get her PATH process back on track and to set and reach new and wonderful goals.

We are all so excited to get to know Avery and Kelsey a bit better and to have them with us at the University this semester!

Daily Shout Outs:

Kaitlyn - Hi Lee!

Rebekah - Hi mom! Great job with your very busy week (you might even be to busy to read this ;)  )

Great day with great guests!

Hello out there!

After a week-long summer break, we are back at learning and loving literacy!
Shannon, Rebekah, Jenna

We had some great literacy guests today - Beloved teacher and friend of Astonished!, Judy Humphries and the lovely Lynice Dorgan, Speech Language Pathologist extraordinaire and sister of Kennen! And we had our wonderful shutterbug Brenda Maclauchlan with us as well. Stay tuned for some great pics....
Rebekah had a lovely and action-packed time in PEI and brought a bit of the beach back with her! With Sound Blending "m" words, Rebekah designed a menu with "m" food and drink galore! mmmmmmmmmm!
Avery reading from her i-pad
Avery was "soft" today! She wore the nicest blue sweater that felt as good as it looked! She also became the teacher, when she taught the lovely Judy Humphries how to play 4 pics/1 word!
Kaitlyn made it to the literacy program just in time today! She did great work, and is excited about the "online window shopping" technology piece tomorrow.
Jenna, Lynice, Kennen, Rebekah, Ella
setting up our work space
Kennen masted the "n" Letter-Sound Correspondence. She also showed what she had been up to during her time at the lake! Homework! Or, rather, lakework. :)
We missed you today, Megan and Tara! Come back and join us tomorrow, ok?
A very great Wednesday, indeed.

Thanks for reading!

Wednesday 24 July 2013

Lovely Wednesday!

Hello out there!

Right off the bat, Rebekah set a beautiful tone for Wednesday when she told everyone that she was so excited about the literacy day ahead. And, maybe even more exciting - Rebekah is off to P.E.I. at the crack of dawn tomorrow morning. She is really looking forward to seeing the 38 wonderful family members that are ready and waiting to see her, and party with her!
After getting caught in the downpour last night, Megan also had a great literacy day and enjoyed the awesome skype session with everyone else in the program. Technology, eh?
And this is no secret, Avery has decided that she much prefers the shared reading book Can you Keep a Secret over the group reading book Shiloh. Must be all of the juicy bits, right Avery???
Kennen did an amazing job reviewing the letter-sound correspondence letters "a, m, and p" and even mastered the brand new "o".  She also was literally counting down the minutes until the previously mentioned skype date with all of the literacy groups.
For all of the baseball fans out there (and even the non-baseball fans out there!), Kaitlyn has a great movie recommendation for you - Walk a Mile in his Shoes.
Moving and sad, with a very, very happy ending. And who doesn't love a happy ending?

Thanks for reading!

Thursday 11 July 2013

It's over already???

Hello out there!

No, the summer literacy program is not over (it has only just begun!) but the day DID seem to fly by! Megan, we agree with you 100%.
Avery had a great day but she has one request - for Ella to stop taking about how cute her (Avery's) brother is! Totally fair, Avery!
Rebekah is determined to be surprised about her 23rd birthday...which is happening THIS weekend. She does not want to know the where or the when, but only that something birthday-related is happening. SURPRISE Rebekah!
A very awesome thing that happened today (and there were just so many to choose from!) was that Kennen began reading the words that were text messaged to her. SO exciting and such a proud literacy moment. Gracias Amiga!
And now all Kaitlyn needs to do is remember her i-tunes password and she will be able to read all of the e-books on her summer reading list.....

Have a great weekend, folks! We are looking forward to what next week will bring.

Wednesday 10 July 2013

Ice Breaker - Ice Broken!

Hello out there!

We're back! And we are greater in numbers! It is so great to see some old faces and to warmly welcome some new ones. Megan and Avery are fantastic new additions to the University scene! We were happy to send some quality time catching up, getting to know each other, and breaking the ice.
This summer we are not Student Researchers, but Literacy Students, and it is all very exciting. The three types of lessons that we are doing so far: Sound Blending - right, R-E-B-E-K-A-H?, Letter-Sound Correspondence, and Reading Comprehension. Different game plans for different literacy goals. Today was a great (and hectic!) first day and we are ready and excited for more!

Stay tuned....

Thursday 20 June 2013

Pollito Pio!

Hello out there!

Pollito Pio! The little chicken had us all dancing today....
Today was day two of our literacy assessments. We powered through Phoneme Segmentation and Letter-Sound Recognition. Everyone did great and we got some very good information. And Rebekah gets an MVP award for completing 4 assessment slides in a row.
And the shared reading portion of our day was lovey and relaxing! Reading for fun is exactly that - FUN...for the most part, anyway.

We are excited (and just a little sad!) to tell you that we are going on vacation. For the next two weeks we will not be at the University. We will be at the lake or other fun places. After this well-deserved break, we will be ready to start our summer literacy program again on July 10. We are delighted to be adding new literacy students Megan and Avery to the mix. SO much to look forward to.
Enjoy the next few weeks, folks!

Daily Shout-outs:

Kennen - Reed and Renee, come on down to the lake!

Wednesday 19 June 2013

Lovely Literacy!

Hello out there!

Our literacy program has begun! It is oh-so-good to be on a summer literacy PATH. Today was all about assessments (THESE ARE NOT TESTS, right, Kennen, Rebekah, and Kaitlyn??) so that program instructors can make all the best decisions about individual instructional goals and content.
Assessment # 1 was about Sound Blending and once we got used to the words and silly symbols, everyone did a great job. ;)  Less successful was our beat-boxing youtube video break - maybe too much sound blending for anyone's liking.  LOL
We will also be ending each day with shared reading. The best news? Everyone has selected their own awesome book to read.

Our summer reading list?

Kaitlyn - The Immortals

Rebekah - Hatchet

Kennen - Penelope

We are already looking forward to tomorrow....

Daily Shout-outs:

Kaitlyn - What's up, Mary? Big thanks to Lynice for the book!

Kennen - Lynice, thank you for all the help. Looking forward to your next text. :)

Rebekah - Hi Brenda! Can't wait to see all of your beautiful photos.

Bekah's 3rd Broyhill Bash

Hello out there!
From one great day to another. We at the A!TLC went to Broyhill for the afternoon, where we were once again completely spoiled by the fantastic hospitality of Rebekah and her family. You know you are in a good situation when you can count on the smell of freshly baked cinnamon buns to greet you at the door. The weather did not exactly cooperate, but we were having too much fun to notice. Rebekah and Bonnie can also take pride in their sweeping card game victory! Kennen and Ella have no (actual) hard feelings. ;)
We at the A!TLC hope that everyone has had a good a week as we have! And here's to a great weekend, too!

Kennen's Grenfell Presentation

Hello out there!

What a pleasure it was to spend the day in lovely Grenfell, Saskatchewan! The A!TLC went on location to the Grenfell United Church on June 12 to support Kennen as she gave a presentation in her awesome hometown.
This is the presentation that we have been planning (and blogging about!) for weeks. Kennen was invited by the UCW to come and show what she is doing each day at the University. And what she is doing is A LOT! It was oh so good to share that with a bright and supportive audience. Huge thanks to the ladies of the UCW for their hospitality and thoughtful questions. This day was a highlight and we all were able to come away from it feeling greatly encouraged. The delicious potluck reception at the end did not hurt either! Thanks for reading!

Tuesday 11 June 2013

A Cinderella Story/Welcome Back Kaitlyn!

Hello out there!

What a bright start to the A!TLC week! Kaitlyn is back, feeling good and looking even better.
And a start with big laughs too - Rebekah earned the nickname Cinderella when she noticed that she was missing a shoe!
We were delighted to welcome the U of R`s Randy Johner who came to talk about her fall DisAbility Issues class. Kaitlyn was a mentor in Randy`s class last fall and had a fantastic experience. With the offer for some of us to become mentors next semester, there is lots to look forward to!
Speaking of next semester, Kaitlyn`s PATH will be full on literacy for the summer and her fashion goals will revisited first thing in September.
We might have a fun pub lunch date to look forward to in mid-July. Stay tuned for updates!
Tomorrow is the BIG day! Kennen`s Grenfell presentation is finally upon us. The video, slideshow, and photo album are looking great and Kennen is ready to rock! Wish her luck!
We are now off to coffee and to bask in the glow of everyone being back together. It`s all good.

Daily Shout-outs:

Kaitlyn - What`s up Mary! I am back at the University and you can stop by for a visit anytime. ;)

Rebekah and Kennen sandwich?

Hello out there!

Kaitlyn will be back at the A!TLC next Tuesday, and that is very good news indeed.

Today, we started out with the bread - Kennen bread, to be precise - we viewed the first draft of the A!TLC slideshow that will be shown at Kennen's Grenfell presentation. Links to this very blog, and to the A! website and facebook accounts will be included in this slideshow and we are hoping to come away from June 12 with a few more followers, visitors, and "likers". :)

Now onto the cheese - We listened to Rebekah's Literacy strengths, dreams, and needs interview and she she told us what was what! A highlight? Rebekah confirming that she is great at answering questions...after answering dozens of questions. Big laughs all around!

Back to the bread - Kennen worked on her photo album and everyone got to pick their favorite photo that she has taken so far. Encouraging and inspiring! Her album is looking darn GOOD.

The dessert? Inclusion cafe tomorrow at Brewsters South! 3:00 pm. Come raise a glass to Rebekah's awesome aunt Ruth for her birthday.

Daily Shout-Outs:

Rebekah - Happy early birthday, Ruth! And what's up, Dad!

Kennen - Excited to see you this weekend, Tanys and Zoe!

A!TLC: SO great to see you last night, Kaitlyn. We can't wait to see you next week.

Fun with I-Movie!

Hello out there!

Today was a real team effort and an experiment with the I-Movie program. We all worked together and after a few tries and a few discarded (cringe-worthy) royalty-free song choices, we now have the beginnings of a great A!TLC video to show the folks in Grenfell!
It was also a big day for assistant photographers! Kennen was presented an official contract for an A!TLC Assistant Photographer gig. This is an internship position that will allow her to learn as she goes and encourages seeking out different photographic subjects and opportunities. Fortunately Kennen already has a great eye for detail!
We will be having our Inclusion Cafe this Thursday (June 6 - Rebekah's aunt Ruth's birthday!) at Brewsters South at 3:00. All are more than welcome to join.

Makeover Extravaganza!

Hello out there!

First things first, we would like to tell you folks a bit about Rebekah's fabulous make-up party that we had last Thursday night.  There were chats, potluck snacks, and great drinks served by Rebekah, and there was more make-up than we knew what to do with! Actually, courtesy of the make-up night, we might know a bit more about what to do with make-up now. Rebekah might be inspired to incorporate a bit of make-up into her daily routine.
But remember, less is always more ladies! A huge thank you to everyone who came out and to Rebekah for hosting. And a huge thanks to Joy for the brilliant demonstration. We will be sure to keep you in the beauty loop. Thanks for reading!

Rebekah's Literacy strengths, dreams, and needs

Hello out there!

This post is short and sweet. The sweetest thing? Rebekah is about to have an interview to determine her literacy strengths, dreams, and needs. This summer's literacy program is all about finding a literacy path that suits each participant and is shaped by their individual strengths, dreams, and needs. Rebekah is confident that whatever comes from today's interview, the A!TLC will be sure to support her with her literacy goals. Lots to look forward to....

Lessons....

Hello out there!

Today, Kennen's A!TLC experience began with the most universal lesson - if soda pop is shaken, it is only a matter of time before it explodes. A sticky, yet amusing, start to the day!
After we finished laughing, we all got to meet the new A! Literacy/Augmented Communications Coordinator, the lovely Shannon McNabb. With our Literacy Program launching on June 18, it is going to be a darn good summer.
There was a bit of recapping from the A! May 25 AGM. By all accounts, it was a great opportunity to reflect on a very good year.
Kennen finished choosing the content for the A!TLC video to be shown at her June 12 presentation. Speaking of which, it was so great to see the A! shout-out in the church bulletin for the Grenfell UCW!
Rebekah is looking forward to tomorrow's Literacy Strengths, Dreams, and Needs interview and also, her Make-up party! There is a lot to be excited about this week! And in the weeks to come!

Thank you for reading!

Literacy Interviews begin....

Hello out there!
Today was not a typical A!TLC session, but rather, an interview based around Kennen's literacy strengths, dreams, and needs. Although Kennen was in the spotlight today, don't think that Rebekah and Kaityln are off the hook! Their own literacy interviews are going to take place in the coming weeks.:)

It was an insightful afternoon! Kennen's awesome sister Lynice was able to offer great literacy advice and everyone is excited to get started. Another good thing is that we finished off the day with an excellent Inclusion Cafe at Brewsters. All good things!

Thanks for reading!

Living and Loving Literacy!

Hello out there!

We at the A!TLC are EXCITED!
Why, you ask?
Because we are getting ready to launch the new A! Summer Literacy Program!
Kenne, Kaitlyn, and Rebekah, along with three other A! Core Members will begin this new program in mid-June but today was spent as a bit of an introduction for what is to come. It was also an excuse to get creative. Literacy is much more than just reading books.  Rebekah, our A!TLC Inclusion Cafe Server is excited to start reading menus!
And being hip young adults, our Student Researchers are ready to perfect their texting, Facebooking and Skyping skills. It is all literacy and it is all good.
We are about to be put to the test - we have to follow the first clue in a scavenger hunt that Bonnie has put together. Wish us luck (like we need it)!

Daily Shout-outs:

Kennen - Welcome back Tanys and Zoey!

Dancing!

Hello again!

Hello out there!

It is us again, here to tell you about today's A!TLC session.
Rebekah was happy to catch everyone up with the review work that she did last week. Not that she would brag or anything, but Rebekah has been doing a pretty darn good job of meeting her three month goals. Here's to keeping up the excellent work and to showing off those glorious check marks! Check!

Speaking of getting things done, Kennen made a lot of progress on her upcoming Grenfell presentation. Kennen worked on her personal photo album (including taking a great pic of Rebekah and Ella today!), selected pictures to go in her A!TLC video, and confirmed the strengths, dreams, and needs from her second interview. It is becoming clear that this presentation is going to be one for the books!

**Inclusion Cafe is going on location again. If you would like to stop by, you can find us at Brewsters South at 3:00 pm this Thursday! Oh, and we will be on the patio if it is sunny. ;)

Daily Shout-outs:

Rebekah - Josh, Gaby, Mason, and James, Thank you for the sweet weekend visit.
Kennen - Lynice and Kris, I am glad you are home and thank you for letting me use your Ipad!

Back to Broyhill!

Hello out there!

We have got to tell you about the fantastic time that we all had last Thursday at Bekah's 2nd Broyhill Bash!  The itinerary? Begin the day with freshly baked cinnamon buns served by Rebekah herself. SUCH a nice treat and a way to start our Broyhill experience.
With her new position as the A!TLC Assistant Photographer, Kennen was sure to bring her camera to help document the action. Great work!

Now, onto the scavenger hunt.... Rebekah and her mom planned an exciting (but difficult!) list for everyone to complete.  It was an awesome way to tour all of the Lindenbach property and a good opportunity to get a nature fix.
It is safe to say that everyone came away a winner!

And if we weren't spoiled enough, we finished off the day with ice cream treats on the sunny deck.
Huge thanks to our lovely hosts for making Broyhill such a fun and welcoming place to be. We can't wait until the next time!

Reflections/Off to Broyhill we go!

Hello out there!

This is just a quick blog to let you know what we have been up to! Yesterday was an awesome day for the A!TLC to take a look at Rebekah's PATH and reflect on all that she had done. As blank pages on the wall became filled with written accomplishments, it was a great thing to see, indeed. No one can deny that it feels pretty darn good to check things off, and that is exactly what Rebekah was able to do! Rebekah's three month goals are nearly in the bag and she is so looking forward to setting new ones. And the A!TLC is delighted to get to support her! In keeping with Rebekah's PATH, today the A!TLC is going back on location to Broyhill so that she can show everyone a wonderful time at her family dairy farm. Although expectations are quite high (it is going to be hard to top Bekah's first Broyhill Bash!), we at the A!TLC are excited and confident that today will be a GOOD day. Stay tuned for pictures and updates....

Thank you for reading!

Snapshots and Special Guests

Hello out there!

First off, Kennen did her homework! Her career as the A!TLC Assistant Photographer is well underway. The goal is for Kennen to take a photo each day to build an album from her point of view. She brought her first picture to today's A!TLC. The subject - Her sister's boyfriend, Kris. This pic was taken right before his University graduation and, dare we say, Kris has never looked better! Today, Kennen took a picture of pages filled with her strengths, dreams, and needs from her second interview. Click!
We have big plans for the days to come and look forward to sharing Kennen's snapshots with you.

And speaking of Kennen's second interview, after we all recovered from hearing the sounds of our own voices, we wrote out all of the strengths, dreams, and needs that we heard. Listening to a room filled with that much love and support was very good to hear, indeed.

We were all delighted to have a very dear friend of Rebekah's at our daily coffee. Today we were joined by Barbara Barnett, someone who has known Rebekah for over half of her life! Rebekah and Barbara had a great chance to catch up and everyone agreed that Barbara was a wonderful addition to coffee time. Cheers!

Daily Shout-outs:

Rebekah:
Brenda - I am glad that you did not get lost today. ;)
Ruth: I hope that you had a good eye appointment and am happy that you decided not to ride your bike!
Barbara: Thanks so much for coming to the University for a visit!

Kennen:
Good luck to Reed and Renee with the big move!

A!TLC:
What's up Kaitlyn? ;) Missed you today!
Broyhill, get ready for us! We are coming soon!

Feedback on Feedback??

Hello out there!

Yesterday was a continuation of our Winter 2013 Semester evaluation and today we spent a bit of time, well, evaluating our evaluation. Getting feedback for our feedback. :) We at A!TLC are top notch communicators and it is good to know that there are no (or at least, not too many) stones left unturned!
What a week it has been so far...and it is only Wednesday!
We are still on the right PATH (get it?) and there are lots of things happening. Kennen has had a chance to access her strengths, dreams, and needs that came out of her first big interview. They are almost presentation ready and things are coming together. And that's not all! Kennen has been offered a new job as the A!TLC Assistant Photographer! A position that she is excited but nervous for. She has also agreed to put together a photo album to be shared at both her June 12 presentation, and on Facebook.
Speaking of jobs, Rebekah has made it clear that while she is enjoying her serving job, she also might like a bit of a raise. Reasonable  We'll talk, Rebekah... We did talk today about Rebekah's second Broyhill Bash - same conditions apply - bring yourself and your favorite pair of rubber boots!
The A!TLC Inclusion Cafe is going on location tomorrow to Triffon's Pizza on Kramer BLVD. Another familiar haunt in the University experience! We will be there at 3:00 pm if you want to stop by.

Thanks so much for reading!

Shout-outs:

Both Rebekah and Ella would like to say hello to Ella's mom and dad in Ottawa! Rebekah also says hello to her lovely aunt, Juliann Blaser Lindenbach.

Kennen: Sasha and Tony, I am thinking of you. Congratulations Christopher on your Convocation!

Fun Feedback!

Hello out there!

In honor of new semester beginnings in a new classroom, we thought it would be a good idea to look back at how far we have come and how much we have done. From our first day (January 10!) until now, a good deal has happened!

We began by looking at a slideshow of our many highs (opportunities at the U of R, triumphant presentations, and our Fun/Fundraising event) and a few lows (the NEVER ENDING winter). By all accounts, it was a great reflection.

On to the group work - everyone worked in small groups to review the daily goings on at the A!TLC. For each topic, "Inclusion Cafe" and "Daily Check in" to name a few examples, each Student Researcher was able to say if they liked, didn't like, or were lukewarm about plus some elaboration. Great insight was given and it will be wonderful to take this feedback to apply to the new semester.

And this just in! There has been a change of plans. Following the recommendation of Rebekah, we are going to move our coffee meeting to the pub. Any objections? We think not!

Thanks for reading!

Daily Shout-outs:

Rebekah says a big hello to her friend Arlyce.

Kaitlyn says hi to Lisa and wishes her good luck on Saturday.

Kennen says hi to Liz in Rioverde, S.L.P. And she also says hi to Sara!

PATH Work x 2!

Hello out there!

Happy May 1! We are just wrapping up our first day in our new space. For the months of May and June we are going to be in the same room each day in the classroom building. We are delighted.

Today we were minus one - the lovely Kaitlyn Hoar was not at the A!TLC - so we used the time to work on both Kennen and Rebakah's individual PATHS.

For Kennen, who has just begun the initial PATH process, we worked together to compile the strengths that were listed at her great Grenfell interview. As Kennen is extremely modest, it is great to have her agree with the excellent things that her family and friends always say about her. We are also very excited to announce that Kennen is going to be giving a presentation on June 12 and everyone is thrilled to support her in this.

As for Rebekah, she was hard at work making a guest list and an invitation for her upcoming make-up party. Things are coming together and we are all excited (and a little nervous) to get a new look.

The sun is out and things are looking good. We are just about to head down for coffee.  Thank you for reading!

Daily Shout-Outs:

A!TLC would like to say thank you again to the Lindenbach family for their wonderful hospitality last week! And hello Kaitlyn! Hope you had a great day!

Kennen would like to say hello to Carmen (this hello is from both Kennen and Silvia!)

Rebekah would like to say hello to her excellent brothers - Adam, Lucas, and Josh

Tuesday April 30th

SNOW DAY.... can you believe it?  Yet another day cancelled due to poor road conditions and terrible weather.  Missing the sun that we experienced at Bekah's Broyhill Bash last Thursday!

Bekah's Broyhill Bash (Part 1)

Hello out there!

We would like to take some time to tell you about the awesome experience that we all had at Bekah's first Broyhill Bash last Thursday. As part of Rebekah's PATH process, the A!TLC made the trek out to her family dairy farm. And what a good time it was!

The weather - perfection! It was oh so wonderful to catch some rays out on Rebekah's deck. The lucky few remembered their sunglasses...and looked amazing.

There were refreshing drinks and hot homemade cinnamon buns served by Rebekah herself. She even came prepared with an apron! She did a great job of hosting and serving.

As for the cows, well, no one was put to work milking them. But we all came away understanding the daily goings on at the Broyhill Dairy Farm.

The day was an absolute pleasure and we are already looking forward to our return - as long as we promise to keep the giant (but adorable) dogs away from Kennen.

Huge thank you to the Lindenbach family for having us. They made our day great!

There are just too many photos to post!  Here are a couple to peak your curiosity.  For more please visit the Bekaha's Broyhill Bash Photo Album on Facebook

Thanks for reading!

Highlighting Kennen

Hello Again!

Today we spent our afternoon listening to one of Kennen's interviews exploring her Strengths, Dreams and Needs.  As we played back the audio recording of her first interview Ella kept track of and documented the Strengths, Dreams and Needs that Kenenn's family and friends identified.   Kennen will soon receive an email to review all the information.  This will give her a chance to decide what she agrees with, what she does not and what she wants to add!  More homework for Kennen!  But at least it is fun homework!

After listening to and documenting Kennen's first interview we continued to explore Rebekah's PATH!  We are looking forward to the upcoming make-up party.  In the next few days we will continue to organize the gathering!

Daily Shout Outs!

A!TLC ~  Thank you Randy Johner for helping us out today!
Kennen ~ Hi Ahsley!  Hoping you can make it to the Inclusion Cafe of May 23rd!

A!TLC visits Earls

Hello Out There,

Sorry for not posting yesterday!  We moved A!TLC from the U of R to Earls on South Albert Street and changed our hours from the afternoon to the evening.  We all met at Earls and enjoyed a nice supper together.  We were so busy eating and visiting that we forgot to take pictures ~ sorry!  To our delight also saw a friendly face ~ turns out Tracy works at Earls in her 'spare' time.  It was great to see her and we hope to run in to her again!  Lauren Vickaryous (Bonnie's toddler) also joined in on the fun.  This was her first time meeting all of the gang!

After our fabulous dinner we headed to Rebekah's Rae Street home to continue our great conversations.  Kaitlyn also got to spend some time with Edgy (Eye Gaze Edge).  It was a great time for all!

Hello from WRC

Hello Out There!

What a day! Today we had a wonderful tour of Wascana Rehabilitation Centre thanks to our excellent
tour guide Rebekah Lindenbach.  We also want to thank Pascal, an Astonished! core member, for her expertise.  They showed us the auditorium (which we hope to be able to book for Tuesday to show our Kin 120 barriers and enablers presentation and to watch a movie), 2 atrium spaces, the location where Rebekah and Kaitlyn's school used to be, the pool, and the cafeteria.

We are now enjoying a variety of hot and cold beverages at the cafeteria.

We hope everyone has a wonderful weekend!

Daily Shout Outs
A!TLC ~ Thanks to WRC for having a personal care space available for us
Kaitlyn ~ Hi to Mary and have a good trip!
Rebekah ~ Hi to Dad have those cows ready for the bash next Thursday!

Rollin with it!

Hello out there!

It's final weeks at the U of R which means for the next few days we do not have booked space.  This gave us the opportunity to hang out in the Riddell Centre.  Like most U of R students we enjoyed sandwiches from Henderson's cafe and then got down to business.
Kennen and Ella in the Riddell Centre

After check-in we continued to make plans for our upcoming field trips.  On Thursday we will be going to Wascana Rehabilitation Centre where Rebekah will lead us in a tour.  Planned tour stops include visiting with core members who are residents of WRC and visiting with our facebook manager Ryan Ross.   Next Tuesday (if we can get access to the WRC auditorium) we plan to show our friends the jeopardy game that we presented in Kin 120 last week.

To end our day we continued to explore Rebekah's PATH making plans for her to host a makeup party!

Daily Shout Outs

A!TLC ~ Kaitlyn what's up, we missed you today!

Rebekah ~  Hey Pascal check your Facebook

Kennen ~ Good luck in your new job Sandy

Professional Development

Hello out there!

Hope everyone is doing well! This is just a quick note to tell you about the great workshop that Astonished! Executive Director Bonnie Cummings-Vickaryous and Program Developer Ella McIntyre were able to attend yesterday. This workshop was called "Finding Value Within My Day" and was lead by Cara Milne of M-Powered Planning. It was held in Saskatoon and the weather gods gave Bonnie and Ella great roads to make the highway journey from Regina. Thanks, weather gods!
Cara gave us lots to think about and lots to be encouraged about. She gave clear and thoughtful instructions and tips on how to support people with disabilities in having a value-filled day. We at the A!TLC always feel like there is great value in the days that we spend together and it was nice to be reminded of this, and to have a new crop of ideas to pull from.
Grateful for yesterday's learning opportunity, Bonnie and Ella are back in Regina now and are excited and ready to have an excellent afternoon at the A!TLC.  We will all be at the University of Regina today (during finals week...you can practically hear a pin drop!) but are planning a few field trips for the next few sessions. Happy (and Astonishing!) days!

Dang We're Good

Hello Out There...
Silvia, Kennen, and Ella

Well our presentations for the Winter 2013 semester are complete...... that is four if we are counting!  Yesterday the student researchers rocked their presentation in Kin 120. Kennen shone in the front with Silvia and Ella and Rebekah and Kaitlyn shared their expertise from the back.  Through personal examples the student researchers shared their knowledge on enablers and barriers to recreation, leisure and physical activity. The Kin 120 students appreciated the practical examples to reinforce the academic literature they learned the previous week.

Kaitlyn
Today we were part of a workshop series for the University of Regina's Centre for Teaching and Learning.  Our presentation included a description of The Big Sky Centre for Learning and Being Astonished! inc, an overview of the A!TLC, and the Roles of a Student Researcher.  Our presentation will eventually be posted to their website.  We will be sure to link to it once it is ready.

We are now enjoying a coffee in one of the common areas of the U of R.
Kennen, Ella, and Rebekah

Daily Shout Outs!

A!TLC ~ thank you to the Centre for Student Accessibility for inviting us to be part of the workshop series.

Rebekah ~  Hello to Lynn Blaser  and JVO in Toronto.

Kennen ~ No shout out for today.
